How I fixed the macbook pro 16 fan noise overheating problem

--

Hi there, my name is Martin Ratinaud, I’m a senior software developer looking for a remote job and I had the chance (and money!) to get my hands on the new Macbook Pro 16.

I’ve been an Apple boy for work since 2012 and I can say I’ve been really happy with it along the way.

I naturally aimed at the best known computer for my new job at Hooked and took the following config

Apple | 16-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar

2.4GHz 8-core 9th-generation Intel Core i9 processor

AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 8GB of GDDR6 memory

32GB

1TB, with French Keyboard Layout — Space Grey

Living in 🇲🇺 Mauritius, the price was quite big: 180,000Rs (US$4500) and I was expecting a constant joy of working with such a jewel.

I was wrong…

I do not know if it’s the fact that I’m not using any AirCon where I work but the fans are constantly at 100%. And the aluminium case is hot as hell.
Fortunately, I mostly use it with another keyboard and a magic mouse so I do not sense that so much but the work with an external display makes it even worse.

The solution

  1. Use it to cook your eggs
  2. try TG Pro and buy it because it’s only 10$, compared to what relief it brings!

TG Pro

TG Pro is a product from Tunabelly that will take over your mac to control your fans.
Install is quite easy and support is really nice and responsive. Thank you Matt BTW.

I made many back and forth on configuration and found out this one works quite well.

⚠️ NOTE: I disabled the CPU throttle fix to prevent the fans to bump to 90% every now and then, which was really annoying. Although if you do this, make sure the fans Auto Boost Rules are set correctly to not make your mac roast. For more information on this Read this

This will reduce the fan noise, but not the overheating though…

Another awesome info: Chrome is Bad

Thanks to twitter, I discovered this wonderful website that everybody should be aware of: https://chromeisbad.com/

So I did it, I removed Chrome and Keystone and switched to Firefox.

What’s Next

This is to me a major problem that will surely make me go away from mac when I have the chance.
It’s unbelievable that such a problem exists on such a pricy machine and I would love to have your feedback on if you managed to get reimbursement or if you used another trick to solve the overheating.
